ARTISAN, ON THE CULINARY CASE
You don’t need detective powers to uncover why an award-winning restaurant in East Yorkshire is proving such a success.
As a diner at Artisan, in Hessle you can’t miss the conclusive evidence that attention to detail is top of the menu.
And just a little more investigation will reveal why this culinary jewel in the shadow of the majestic Humber Bridge is run with such a passion for precision.
The chief suspect is the first person you’ll meet - restaurateur Lindsey Johns who’s in charge of Artisan’s front of house. Until four years ago, she was a scene of crimes officer with Humberside Police and admits that her many years in “S.O.C.O” proved invaluable, if unusual training for a culinary career.
“Years of scouring crime scenes for the smallest piece of evidence certainly gives you a good eye for detail”, she says. “I can spot a fingerprint on a glass from a mile away and working on really big cases taught me skills that are proving really useful in the hospitality trade - like doing the work of six people and working round the clock – and still managing to stay awake!”
Lindsey may be a stickler for detail, but the ambience she creates is far from forensic. “We work very hard to keep everything low key and comfortable and offer a really personal dining service” she explains.
Artisan is based in a Grade Two Listed Georgian Townhouse at The Weir in the affluent suburb of Hessle – four miles from Hull and eight miles from Beverley, one of the most attractive market towns in Yorkshire.
Its growing reputation for unpretentious and honest food is down to Lindsey’s partner in crime - her husband Richard, who single handedly prepares every dish using top notch ingredients. A self-taught chef, Richard gained his experience both in private service, employed by a very well respected aristocratic family, and also on the Michelin Star circuit.
The couple really did join forces four years ago – getting married and launching their restaurant in the same year. Their dedication, hard work and passion for their business have already made Artisan one of the highest listed restaurants in Yorkshire, with entries in the Michelin Guide and a 4-star rating in the Good Food Guide.
Growing their business has happily coincided with a major regeneration of the Hull area. Many of Lindsey and Richard’s customers are local business leaders or people with second homes in the area, who have discovered this small but special gem.
“We absolutely love what we do” said Lindsey “and our customers are a lot livelier and more appreciative than those I used to deal with in my old job”, Lindsey adds.
